WHEN: NOW
ACTIVITY: SOME URL'S TO GIVE US UPDATES ON
ISRAEL
(Thanks to
Andrea)
Some URLs with english language on-line news from israel-
has more up todate 'breaking news' than we're getting her
from our Australian sites (eg The Age/ ABC).
The two main ones, both in English and also with 'breaking news headlines' are
Haaretz- www.haaretz.com
Jerusalem Post- www.jpost.com
There is also one called- web.israelinsider.com/home.htm but
I'm not sure if I've got it right / what it is as I haven't been
able to get it open.
Finally there is JTA- which is US based www.jta.org/
Personally I'm sticking to the first two. Also I think I've
worked out Israel is 7hrs
behind us- helps when looking
at the time on the new headlines.

MORE INFORMATION FOR YOU .....
Zionist Federation of Australia
LtdFW: Solidarity Mission -
Personal Invitation - PLEASE DISTRIBUTE TO YOUR DATABASES
Dear
Friend
You have recently been sent a memo from the World Zionist
Organisation advising you of a solidarity mission from around the world to
Israel from August 7th -9th.
Please regard this as a personal
invitation to you or anyone else who you believe would be interested.
Until
25th June, when Gilad Shalit was kidnapped, Israel was enjoying one of those
only too brief periods of relative calm. Industry was getting back on its
feet; much needed infrastructure was being built at a rapid pace and tourism was
at last booming.
With the necessary call up of reserves and the need to be on
a war footing in the far north and around Gaza, Israel is once again battling on
a number of fronts. Not just militarily, but also to keep its economy
afloat and everyday life running in some normal form. The resilience of
the Israelis is legendary, but they cannot keep going without at least the moral
support of us as Jews around the world.
Cost: Land cost US$400 plus return
airfare
We have been contacted by ElAl as to the possibility of reduced
fares. We can advise further.

Graham good morning.
Hope all
is well. Please send this to your contacts. Thank you. Gig.
Many of us
recognize the importance of the Internet as
the new battleground for Israel's
image. It's time to
do it better and coordinate our on-line efforts on
behalf
of Israel. An Israeli software company have developed a
free,
safe and useful tool for us - the Internet Megaphone.
Please go to www.giyus.org , download
the Megaphone and you will receive daily
updates with instant
links to important internet polls, problematic articles
that
require a talk back, etc.
We need 100,000 Megaphone users
to make a difference. So,
please distribute this mail to all Israel's
supporters.
Do it now. For Israel.

Compliments of JNF Next Generation
Tu B'Av- the 15th Day of Av, is both an
ancient and modern holiday.
Originally a post-biblical day of joy, it served
as a matchmaking
day for unmarried women in the second Temple period (before
the fall
of Jerusalem in 70 C.E.). Tu B'Av was almost unnoticed in the
Jewish
calendar for many centuries but it has been rejuvenated in
recent
decades, especially in the modern state of Israel. In its
modern
incarnation it is gradually becoming a Hebrew-Jewish Day of
Love,
slightly resembling Valentine's Day in Australia.

ACTIVITY:
"TZIGANI"
Dear members
We are back in action with our next
event coming up on Sunday 13th of August.
"Tzigani" are going to warm us up
on this Sunday evening with some traditional and gypsy music from Russia,
Romania, Hungary, Middle East, South America, France.
The gypsy band TZIGANI
didn't have a name at all for many months - which isn't a surprise when you take
a closer look at the musicians and their bewildering array of talents.Made up of
classically trained musicians who between them play piano, cello, double bass,
bakakaika and violin, the band couldn't find a word or a phrase to convey all
their different skills - until they came upon the word "TZIGANI", from Romani
language, this word means gypsy.
Their innovative sound has already taken
them on tours to Singapore, Korea and all over Australia.
Now they are
bringing their own brand of gypsy fiddling music to The Czech House on Sunday
13th August at 7pm.
TZIGANI's mix of styles comes from the performers'
esoteric background in the music industry and beyond.
Coming from the
classical side, they bring the precision and musicianship yet they are also
freed up from the constraints of classical music and give themselves a lot of
rein to experiment.
This concert at The Czech House is always a sell out - so
book now to not be disappointed.

ACTIVITY: EXHIBITION -
SHELTER FROM THE
STORM:
REFUGEES TO
AUSTRALIA 1933 - 1945
This exhibition, funded by a grant from the Department of Environment and Heritage,
focuses on issues relating to pre-WWII - Europe and the attempts by Jewish people
to find refuge from persecution. It also looks at these events from Australia's
perspective, revealing how the Australian government responded to the refugee
crisis. The exhibition concludes with an overview of the universal aspects of
the refugee experience, then and now.
Through personal case
studies, the exhibition highlights the desperate decisions refugees have to make
and their experiences in a new land.
Issues examined in the exhibition
have cross-curricular appeal:
. the
universal nature and effects of injustice on people's
lives;
. the violation of human
rights;
. the obstacles that make it
difficult for victims to flee
oppression;
. the difficulties of finding
refuge;
. the challenges facing refugees
trying to adjust to life in a new land.

Professor Alter will

convey their vision of reality. These included rhythm,
syntax,
levels of diction, precision of word-choice,
and sound-play. The
existing English translations of the Bible
by and large have made little

these aspects of style, and the challenge of creating a

equivalents for those features of language that
make biblical Hebrew the
subtle and resonant
instrument of expression that it is.
Robert Alter is a
Biblical scholar and a professor of Hebrew
and Comparative Literature. He has
written 17 books, focusing
on such topics as the European novel from the 18th
century to
the present, contemporary American fiction, and modern
Hebrew
literature. He has also written extensively on the
literary aspects of the
Bible and is noted most recently for
his translations of both the original
Hebrew Pentateuch
in The Five Books of Moses, and The Story of David.

WHEN: SUNDAY 27TH AUGUST,
2006
ACTIVITY: DANCE PROGRAMME
CONCERT
Hi everyone,
Lenny & I would like to
organize the dance concert on the
27th of August. This is a Sunday night 7pm.
Please please
email me back if this is ok with you. We would like to
make
sure no one is dissapointed. If this date doesn't work
for you please ring
me. Once everyone has contacted me
I will confirm the date with you. We hope
you will ask your
familys and friends to come. We will also charge $5.00
per
head - this will help partically to cover the cost of Simon
and
Mitzy as well as a catered light super .
Access will fund the
rest.
In terms of the progress of our dance group Lenny and I
feel
that everyone who participates enjoys the sessions. We
feel that
everyone not only enjoys dancing and drumming, but also
enjoys the
socialisation aspect. Each week I have noticed that
the members are more
intune with the rhythms and more aware
of the rest of the
group.
Although this is an expensive exercise as each week it costs
$500.00
(The Song Room subsidize $250) Access together with the dance
group
(each member paying $5)
pays $250, we feel justified in paying this
money and hope you feel
that this is a worth while venture and will continue
to participate.
It you have any comments or concerns please contact
me.

much research on conducting
a camp for anyone that may be interested. We have
found
a jewish owned farm in Bacchus Marsh which we believe to
be perfect
for people with special needs. It has a wide variety of
activities including
horse riding, games, movies, music and cooking.
(everything is optional). We
would like to run it over the Cup weekend
starting Sunday
6th November -
Tuesday 8th. Jannine and I will be attending
along with many leaders and
volunteers. All food will be
kosher and costs will be kept to a minimum (
this is still to
be worked out). For those who are concerned we will
have
separate sleeping. Males in one cabin, Females in another.
We are
required to have a minimum of 15 kids/adults inorder
to be able to run the
camp. Please call Jannine on 95275890 if you have
any concerns or queries. If
you are
interested please email or ring so we can get the ball rolling.
My
children have attended the camps 3 times, Mindy is 8

have had experiences they will never forget. The
camp is professionally and
expertly run. If
you wish to view it via computer you can find it
at
