Dr Fania Oz-Salzberger will discuss how the Hebrew Bible, the Prophets, and the Talmudic rabbis influenced the philosophies behind English and European liberal thought in the 19th and 20th centuries and their relationship with contemporary ideas of law and justice .
Dr
Oz-Salzberger is the Director of the Posen Research Forum for Jewish European
and Israeli Political Thought at the University of Haifa. Her books include
'Israelis in Berlin' which remained for 21 weeks on the national best-seller
list, 'Translating the Enlightenment: Scottish Civic Discourse in Eighteenth-
Century Germany' and 'Ferguson: An Essay on the History of Civil Society'. Her
forthcoming book is 'The Jewish Origins of Western Ideas of Liberty'. She is
the daughter of celebrated Israeli novelist, Amos Oz .
